Your Four Pillars
Read left to right: year, month, day, hour. The day pillar is highlighted — its top character is your Day Master, the one that stands for you.
Element Balance
Visible stems count 1.0; stems hidden inside the branches count 1.0, 0.5 and 0.3 by depth. This is the raw tally, before any judgement of strength.

What is a Day Master?
The Day Master is the heavenly stem of your day pillar — the single character that
stands for you in the chart. Everything else is read as a relationship to it: what feeds it,
what drains it, what it controls. When a reading says you are “Yin Water” or
“Yang Wood”, that is the Day Master talking.
What if I don’t know my birth hour?
Tick the box and the calculator builds a three-pillar chart instead. Year, month and day
still work normally; you lose the hour pillar, which mainly speaks to later life and to
children. Roughly a quarter of what a full chart says lives in that pillar, so the rest of
the reading holds up fine without it.
Why does the place of birth matter?
Clock time is a political convention; a chart runs on the sun. Two people born at the same
clock minute in different cities can hold different hour branches. We correct for longitude
against the zone meridian, apply the equation of time for that date, and use the time zone
rule that was actually in force on your birthday — not today’s.
What are luck pillars?
Ten-year periods that start at a fixed age and run in sequence for the rest of your life.
Each one drops a new stem and branch onto your chart, which can strengthen what was already
there or press on what was already short. Most of what people call “timing” in
Bazi is the interaction between the natal chart and the pillar currently running.
Is Bazi the same as the Chinese zodiac?
No. The zodiac animal is one character out of eight — the branch of your year pillar.
Bazi reads all eight, plus the stems hidden inside the branches and the ten-year luck
pillars that move across them. That is why two people born in the same animal year can have
almost nothing in common.
